I just got back from a showing of "The Story of Stuff" at my local church, and all I can say is 'Wow.' I know this mini-documentary is nothing new, but I am so glad I was able to watch it. If you have never watched it, I highly recommend you do (all twentyish minutes of it is very worth your time). After watching it, I will:

- be more aware of how much I am consuming, from the paper cup I drink coffee out of, to the five napkins I take from my cafeteria
- be more aware of the quality of clothing I buy (I will not be sucked into planned obsolescence)
- try to change my lifestyle
- realize that recycling is not the answer
- realize that I cannot buy my way to a better environment through reusable bags, an energy efficient car, etc.

Looking around my bedroom now makes me feel really guilty. I am a known pack rat, and now I know that being a pack rat is no longer an O.K. thing. I mean think of everything you really consume on a daily basis...really think. It's not just a coffee and some gas.

mom's day

My mom woke me up this morning by dancing into my bedroom and singing to me, clearly excited for Mother's Day. We went out to breakfast with my dad at this little Greek diner a few towns away. Then we went to an indoor flea market half an hour away, where I picked up a few pieces of jewelry (two rings and an amazing owl necklace, I'll post more later). For dinner, we ended at this delicious Italian restaurant in West Hartford, with unfortunately poor service.

I was at Forever 21 today and was surprised to see them selling organic t-shirts. On their website, they sell six different styles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). I know this is a bit hypocritical since I shop there on occasion, but it seems a bit strange to see a mass-produced brand selling organic clothing ... especially when they're imported. Which, to me, kind of cancels out the purpose of selling organic clothing in the first place (producing it in your own country so that it cuts back on the amount of fossil fuels used to transport the goods). Numbers 1 & 2 are made in the USA (they're part of the Heritage 1981 line), but who knows under what conditions. But oh well; I guess it's a nice cheap organic option.

I had a school function to attend (indoors) on a BEAUTIFUL day yesterday. The only downside of this nice weather is me not being able to breath because of the pollen.

(I wore the same exact outfit pretty much to a fashion show a few weeks ago, and felt like an editor of a magazine)

All I've wanted to do for the past few days is wear extra large, acid-washed tees with leggings and skinny jeans. I realized, though, that I don't own very many oversized tees, my leggings are near the edge of death from being washed so many times this winter, and my skinny jeans bother me. In fact, jeans in general lately have been bothering me. And I'm getting sick of leggings. Good thing summer is almost almost hear, and I won't need to worry about either.

I was browsing on the Urban Outfitter's site in the men's section the other day, simply because they have better t-shirts than the women's section. They have so so many options for ten bucks or less. I really need to make my way down to New Haven for something besides eating late-night dinners with friends (ahem, stock up on some xxl shirts).

This past week has been crazy. I can't believe high school is almost over, and in less than 4 months, I'll be moving into my dorm at Marist.

Yesterday I made my tattoo appointment (oooh, scary!) for my birthday, and bought the cutest yellow dress ever to wear for my anti-prom night consisting of a swanky dinner in downtown Hartford and the Kanye/Rihanna/N.E.R.D./Lupe Fiasco concert.

Now I just have to get through my AP exams, and life will be even better.

Well, for those of you who have checked out the Green Awakening blog (which I have done a horrible job at keeping up with, I know), the fashion show went FABulous! Over $1,500 has been raised so far to donate to the Sierra Club, it was featured in three newspapers, and is now featured in the latest episode of ThreadBanger!!!!!

I know I keep saying this to everyone, but Rob and Corinne really are such an inspiration to me. Their website, blog, and podcast is so informative and unique. I want to try EVERYTHING shown on there at some point in time. They are also both incredibly down-to-earth and generous.

I created an Ebay account last week--now I understand why people are addicted.

My first purchase, a pair of knockoff "Wayfarer" sunglasses (yes, they may be clear, but they supposedly have UV protection) came on Friday. They are so geekalicious. I'm loving all the weird stares I get from people when I wear them.

And for $3 + shipping, they were considerably cheaper than this UO version.

I can't wait for my new dress to come, too!

Green Awakening!

Hi!

This past month has been pretty crazy. Now that I'm a second semester senior, high school really is flying by. I've made a lot of decisions that I'm happy with (such as, not going to my prom! ... more on that later), heard back from colleges I've applied to for fashion design and fashion merchandising, and have been organizing my high school's first fashion show!

I started to learn about organic clothing, repurposed clothing, etc. last year, and knew right away that's what I wanted to do with my life. For an independent study this year, my teacher agreed to let me organize a completely eco-friendly fashion show, whose name was recently christened Green Awakening. The show will take place on Earth Day, and feature an array of clothing and accessories, both donated and made by me!

After the show, a silent auction will be held of all clothing and accessories, with all of its proceeds going towards the Sierra Club.

I made some pico de gallo & "homemade" tortilla chips last night to enjoy whilst viewing the ANTM season premiere. The recipes are from Vegan a Go Go and Allrecipes, respectively.

Both were really easy and reallllly yummy. I omitted the jalapeño in the pico de gallo simply because I didn't have one, and the cumin in the tortilla chips because I didn't have that either.

Oh, how I love free things. Especially free things sent to me in the mail!

Today I received a small catalog of sorts about the new Fafi collection for M.A.C. But even better, it came with Fafi stickers! I had never heard of Fafi before, but learned that she is a French artist who "conjures up the most curvaceous cuties." Her drawings are adorable! The products aren't up for sale yet, but BellaSugar posted this article and picture back in December that gives a sneak peek.

The colors seem perfect for spring. That light pink nail polish above looks like it'd be beautiful!

Beau Soleil

My friend pointed me towards Beau Soleil's website this afternoon and I have to admit, I'm in love. Soleil's clothes are effortless, pretty, and eco-friendly. A woman named Anne Salvatore Epstein named the line after her favorite oyster (cute!). The line "uses fabric made out of bamboo, a sustainable material, vegetable-dyed organic cottons and vintage, tencel, which is made from eucalyptus tress, as well as recycled leather trim".

Right now, there are a lot of cute dresses on sale over at Shopbop, and on their own website under "Fall 2007". (And I'm pretty sure that's Melrose from ANTM in those pictures...)

My calculus midterm is this Friday (blah) but instead of trying to remember how to find critical numbers and use the second derivative test, I decided to look through my Nylon that came yesterday.

One of their articles featured Made in Heaven (MiH) jeans, a brand that I had never heard of before. Originally founded in the late 60s, the label is now being revived by Chloe Lonsdale--godchild of MiH's founder.

Each pair looks super comfy, and the brand is known for their signature flattering cuts. While not available in stores stateside, there are a few pairs currently available on Shopbop and ilovejeans.com.

My parents recently asked me if there was anything particular I wanted as a graduation gift. "A NEW MACBOOK PLEASE" I replied quite quickly. I've been thinking lately, Apple, when will you come out with a new laptop?

Steve Jobs seemed to answer this question when I saw the new MacBook Air featured on Apple's site this afternoon after school. After watching the guided tour, I am a bit skeptical; however, the positives still seem to weigh out the negatives: less than 1"?! 13.3" wide screen?! full keyboard?! three pounds?!

My two main concerns: the price of $1799 (which, like the iPhone, will hopefully drop down), and the lack of a DVD drive. Um, hellooo Apple, you can't expect everyone to "virtually rent movies" from iTunes, or install a program using another computer. That just seems pointless.

My sewing stint

After the boy asked me to mend a sweatshirt pocket for him today, I figured I could whip something up for myself too! I bought this t-shirt as an impulse buy during a visit to Kentucky three years ago. Over the years, one of the sleeve seams ripped so it got thrown into my "I-will-reconstruct-these-shirts-one-day" drawer. (Today seemed like a good day to start on this overflowing drawer.)

I first cut the sleeves to cap sleeves and the neck into a scoop neck. Then I chopped off the bottom hem and sewed it on to create a new collar. All in all, this one was a quickie! I still feel like something is missing, but I can't quite figure out what.

Quick DIY

After an inspirational trip to IKEA this afternoon, I finally decided on the colors I wanted to decorate my room with: maroon, black, white, gold, and brass. For months I have been moving around furniture and gradually getting rid of things I no longer need but needed that extra kick to start the actual redecorating process. I have been inspired recently by rooms with a glamorous, Gothic (Gothic as in romanticism, not as in heavy eyeliner and white foundations) feel.

I bought this plaque and three knobs over a year ago on sale at a local craft store on the basis that the knobs matched my bed frame. It finally got painted this afternoon by yours truly, and now is being put to work as a long necklace hanger.

While fashionistas all over the world are waiting patiently for their turn to paint their fingernails with Chanel’s La Vernis Blue Satin nail polish (or buying it for $65 on eBay), I found a nail polish "knockoff" at my local drugstore the other day. N.Y.C.’s Skin Tight Denim Crème is a mere 99 cents, and so incredibly similar. Other bloggers have been claiming O.P.I.’s Russian Navy is a match, too. So although a Chanel nail polish may be more luxurious than one by N.Y.C. or O.P.I., you won’t be waiting for a package in the mail, and you won’t be set back so much money.

Here's my own set of resolutions for 2008 that I will be happy to keep.

I will...

learn to walk in high heels- as of right now, I walk sort of wobbly in them. I plan on practicing regularly and hopefully by graduation, I'll be a pro!
keep a daily sketchbook and/or blog- I really want to regularly sketch in my sketchbook, or post on here. or both!
stop procrastinating!!!- since the hectic Christmas season, I've been getting better at this. I refuse to give up on this main resolution; my life will be much more free of stress if I learn how to plan things out instead of waiting until the last minute.
keep a money diary- my main concern currently should be saving for college; however, buying a latte or new shirt is so much more appealing. keeping a diary of every cent I spend will help me see my cash downfalls on paper, and will hopefully influence future spending.
clean my room daily- this goes along with not procrastinating (if I let things pile up, cleaning will just take that much longer in the end).
read more & learn something new every day- to expand my knowledge :)
exercise regularly- ...to stay happy. I feel as though putting weight loss & exercising together makes it so much more serious. but after I exercise, I feel so much more energized and happy! the half hour of sweat and pain is worth it for that happiness.
do something for myself once a week- this includes little indulgences such as buying a new nail polish or watching a new movie that I usually wouldn't make time for.

The best candy bar

On Friday, I woke up early to catch an Amtrak train ride into the City with my boyfriend. We had been dreaming about roaming around Manhattan for months, and finally the opportunity arose to make it a reality!

After walking to Central Park in hopes that the ice skating rink would not be too busy (hah!), I was distracted by passerbyers carrying Dylan’s Candy Bar bags of deliciousness. Just last week, I was watching VH1’s “Fabulous Life Of…” and saw this candy store mentioned! We decided to pass on waiting in the never-ending ice skating line, and instead walked over to 3rd avenue in search of this candy store.

When we arrived, we waited in a short line before being released into the two story (soon to be three) candy-lover’s paradise. I practically trampled over young kids just so I could get my grapefruit slices and Haribo candies I had been craving all day! After picking up a bag for myself, and some old-fashioned candies for my parents, we headed to the check out, being left with a “Have a sweet day!” from the cashier.

If you are ever strutting around the Upper East Side like a Gossip Girl and are in need of a candy fix, I recommend Dylan’s Candy Bar to help settle your sweet tooth.

Blush you!

One beauty product I started to crave after receiving a Sephora catalog before Christmas was Smashbox’s O-Glow. The claims seemed too good to be true: just rub a clear gel onto your cheeks with your fingertips, and watch your cheeks blush their natural color. Nevertheless, I was intrigued.

I was so happy to receive O-Glow as a stocking stuffer for Christmas, and promptly tried it out after all the present-opening was complete. And it worked! I found my pale self blushing a light shade of pink that stuck with me for the rest of the day. Although it is definitely different than my favorite peachy Nars blush in Orgasm, it is so easy to use and fun to watch it work its magic.

"Upscale" cheapies?

Cheap no more.

Every now and then, fashionistas like myself I'm sure head to a Goodwill or other thrift store in hopes of finding a name-brand bargain. There's a certain thrill that comes with finding a vintage hat or purse for a few bucks, rather than its original hundred or so. But yesterday when I ventured to the Westport, CT Goodwill in hopes of finding such a steal, instead I found Burberry trench coats for $90, and real fur coats for $300+. Is Goodwill really allowed to charge that much?! I was so shocked and disappointed at the price of these jackets that I left with nothing in hand. (I also found a pair of Marc Jacobs jeans ... an incredibly ugly pair, nonetheless).

Today, I went to a more local Goodwill, not ready to give up so fast on my search for a vintage-y item. There were also $100 fur coats there, and jewelry grab bags for $20. Once again, I bought nothing.

A few minutes ago while browsing Fashionista, I came across an ad for Patricia Field for Payless, a limited edition holiday collection. I adored these boots, but when I saw the price, I was shocked. $55 for Payless boots?! Are you kidding me?

Is anyone else shocked by the new 'upscale' ways of cheap stores? Have you found an item you love, only to discover its higher-than-average price tag? Or is all this frustration completely irrational?

Mishmash

I apologize for the complete lack of posts. College, AP art, and life in general has taken quite a toll on my life. I have narrowed down my list to the Fashion Institute of Techonlogy, Philadelphia University, University of Vermont, Marist, and Assumption. I know I need to focus on actually getting accepted into each school, but I'm really struggling now about where I want to go and what I want to do. I mean, Vermont and NYC are complete opposites!

Any how, I would like everyone to know that I am still reading all of your blogs, and try to comment when I get the chance; reading them keeps me sane during the complete whirlwind that has been this month!

Fall is my favorite season, hands down. So since the weather has continuously been 80 degrees and humid in Connecticut, I have not been a happy camper. Luckily, my family had been planning a quick Vermont visit so we could visit UVM. When we arrived in Burlington this afternoon, I was in heaven. The air was chilly and crisp and the leaves were changing colors; what more could a New England girl ask for?

Granted, I have yet to visit all of the states. But ever since vacationing there two summers ago, it has become one of my favorites. I adore the laid back lifestyle, the weather, and especially the locally produced food. It's funny how I know I want to go to college in New York City or Vermont--they are complete opposites! For those of you ever planning on visiting, here is a must-do activity list:

Visit the Ben & Jerry's Factory; I've gone on the tour three times and each time just gets better and better! (I am a bit ice cream obsessed, though..)

Shop downtown Burlington; with an American Apparel, a myriad of Vermont-made stores, and great food, you could spend all day here and not get bored.

Rent a cabin on Lake Champlain; This is the definition of a relaxing vacation: being surrounded by the wilderness and the lake is just amazing!
Buy your food at local co-ops; Supporting local farmers is a great way to do your part in helping to save the environment (plus the food is just better that way!).

While in Burlington, I picked up a few American Apparel necessities...

While browsing Fashionista last night, I watched their newest Girls Gone Styled video, featuring Mooka Kinney! I had never heard of the duo that is Rachel Antonoff and Alison Lewis before, but I instantly fell in love with them and their clothes. They are the cutest girls ever, creating the cutest vintage-y clothes you'll ever see. According to their website, they're inspired by all things magical such as "Peter Pan" and "winged ponies". If you're like me, and live under a rock (apparently...I hate being the last to know about designers!), I invite you to watch the interview of Rachel and Alison on Fashionista, and then hop over to their own website. I gurantee you'll fall in designer-love with them too!

Highly waisted

Honestly, when I bought these Cheap Monday jeans last month, I didn't realize that they were high-waisted. I think I might've gotten lost in how amazing they fit my body while in the dressing room at Urban Outfitters. They're a little long, and a little loose around the waist, but I'm really bad when it comes to returning clothes or exchanging them, so I'll have to deal. Anyways, it was really chilly today! I saw plenty of people wearing flip flops and short-sleeved shirts at the mall, but I was freezing my bum off. The outfit:

-Gap blue & white striped shirt
-Kohls' necklace & belt
-Cheap Monday skinnies
-Chocolate Uggs ; (It might've been too early in the season to break these out, but I was just dying for a chance to warm my feet with them!)

At the mall today I picked up some goodies including Chanel mascara, a rust-colored (or "curry"-colored, according to my mother) knit tunic, and a knit floppy hat from H&M. I was a bit disappointed with my mascara results, especially after my mom told me my eyelashes didn't look much different than when I use my cheapy Maybelline mascara. Oh well.

Guilty pleasures-9/15/07

It's been a while since I've posted my current guilty pleasures! Here it goes...

Dairy Queen's cotton candy blizzards; Everyone else thinks they're too sweet, but they satisfy my sweet tooth in a way no other ice cream can.
America's Next Top Model reruns; Seriously, are they either on VH1 or MTV every day? I think I've seen every episode of each season at least three times, yet, I continue to watch. (ATNM Fact: They film "____" Next Top Model in over 180 countries!)
Nickelback's "Rockstar"; This is such a catchy song that I always find myself belting out the lyrics to in my car rides.
T.J. Maxx; I found the coolest plaster-cast peace sign there the other day. (And the most hideous Salvatore Ferragamo shoes--at $299.99, though, they didn't seem like much of a bargain to me.)
Procrastinating; Not a good thing now that college application season is right around the corner...

Tired and cold

Those were the two words to describe my early morning. Ugh, I hate having to wake up at 6! I was never a person who slept in until lunchtime, but I like waking up a little later than that. This blog and reading others has really inspired me to dress a little differently each day. Last year, my daily outfit consisted of a t-shirt, jeans, and Birkenstocks (no lie!), yet I still read style magazines religiously and would dress up on the weekends. Now I try to only wear jeans a few times a week, and layer! My mom's friend told me that layering is just an excuse designers/stores make up so that we buy more clothes, but I completely disagree. I've never gone into a store to buy a whole outfit; buying different clothes from different stores and throwing them together makes fashion so much more fun! My outfit for today:

- H&M tunic
-Laila Rowe obi belt
-My mom's brown sweater
-F21 leggings
-Old Navy flip flops (I had no flats that matched!)

The power vested in me

No pun intended, haha. Anyways, before school started, I went to Goodwill looking for a vest. Right as I was about to give up my search, I spotted a mint-condition Brooks Brothers woman's vest. The fit wasn't right though, so I figured I'd just take it in a little eventually.Two weeks later, I decided it was time to make it fit me. I pinched the sides, and sewed a dart on either side. It looks a little strange, since there's darts on my sides and it wasn't just sewed all the way down, but I don't think it looks too bad. Not too shabby for a $4 vest!Worn today with:

Better

This week hasn't been the best for clothes and keeping up with NYC Fashion Week, and I apologize for the lack of posts. My boyfriend of almost 2 years and I broke up on Sunday and it hasn't exactly been easy. Every day I'm getting better, though, little by little, and thankfully I have great friends that have been there for me. It was sort of funny to watch my progression of what I wore this week though: Monday, I wore a gross outfit of sweats, Tuesday was a little better with jeans and a t-shirt, and today...well, today was a pretty good day in my opinion (see right).

Religion has always been a topic I try to steer clear of for many reasons. My personal beliefs differ regarding my own religion and others as well, and I am at the time in my life where I am interested in learning about different religions and beliefs other than my own. Anyways, my parents are very religious people and we go to church (almost) every Sunday. Sometime in elementary school when I was living in Texas, I decided to use this regularity to my advantage: I began to dress up to go to church a little differently than I normally would.

Ever since then, I have used Sunday mornings as my excuse to try out new (appropriate) trends before wearing them out (if they are a little bit dressier) or to school. I love the challenge I give myself to mix pieces together in ways previously unimaginable. I may get a few strange glances from elderly members of the church who are a bit more conservative about their Sunday looks, but it's my small way to have fun and be different from the rest.

Does anyone else do something similar to this? Use a common place they go as their advantage to dress up in new ways? It's fun! If you haven't tried it, thing about your outfit a little more before going to: the grocery store, out shopping, the library, a park, a bookstore...anywhere, really!

A big day

Okay, so today wasn't the most important day ever. Nothing extra, extra special happened to me. But there were two pretty cool things that happened: 1. I got my bottom braces off (yay! now only forever until the top ones come off..), and 2. NY fashion week began!

I'm really dying by the lack of updating websites have been doing. I want to see some runway shots! I was interested by this post regarding the BCBG show. Selita Ebanks, being the celebrity she is, sat and watched whilst texting the magazine via Blackberry. Some interesting texts about the show? "Orange matte lipstick", "marigold organza dress worn with a belt", and "floaty transparent pieces". I'm absolutely dying to see some pictures, here!

Upset with Old Navy

I just got back from my local Old Navy, and am majorly bummed. There were a lot of cute styles there that looked sooo good folded, or on a mannequin: grey skinnies, a charcoal fleece jumper (pictured), a large pocket tunic, etc. But when I tried all of these things on, they were either too big there, or too small here. Talk about frustrating!

One successful piece I tried on (but didn't buy; I'm waiting for it to go on sale!) were wide legged, corset jeans*. I LOVED how they made me feel, and they actually fit pretty well throughout. The only problem was the length, but since I'm a shortie, that's usually the case.

But doesn't it just break your heart when you try an item of clothing on that looks like it'll be fabulous, just to find out it doesn't look good on you? Tear, tear.

My boyfriend and I went to New Haven last night for our last date before he went away to college. We both saw this shirt and thought it was so funny. Being the lucky gal I am, he bought it for me!

Going through his old t-shirts, there was a bunch that didn't fit him anymore. So I was also lucky enough to snag a few worn in, comfty t-shirts to wear to bed (or reconstruct..hmm..).

Back when I started this blog, I wanted to have a unique weekly post under the same subject. After listening to the radio yesterday, I was inspired!; why not a "guilty pleasures" post? We all have them, and I know mine change daily. After posting my most recent guilty pleasures, I would love to hear everyone elses. C'mon, you know you have them!

Avril Lavigne's "When Your Gone" & Pink's "Who Knew" - I swear, that's all they have been playing on the radio, and even though I don't particularly care for either artist, these songs have nice lyrics.

Not having to pay for gas when I go out - Thank you, mom and dad.

Using my womenly-ness as an excuse to eat lots and lots of junk food

Free samples at health food stores - like this local one here.

Being excited for back-to-school shopping - even when I still have homework (and lots of it) to finish up.

Manhattan, part two

Visiting the city yesterday was ten times better than my Monday trip. Why? Please refer to this brief list:

Taking the train & seeing Grand Central Station for the first time
Seeing the memorial service for the NYC firefighters who recently passed away: it was such a beautiful, moving experience, and the amount of people who came to St. Patricks to watch was heartwarming.

Saks, and its shoe level with its own zip code (I felt awkward taking a picture here, so please excuse the horrible-ness of it!)

Chipotle burritos; have you seen the size of those things? Delicious!

I visited the Fashion Institute of Technology with my dad for one of its information sessions. After experiencing a casual, "how about YOU ask me questions and I'll answer them"-type session at Parsons, I wasn't expecting much. Instead, what we got was the most informative, well-rounded 2 hours of information I have heard from any college I've visited. More importantly: now I know this is where I want to go. Everything about FIT is perfect, it's almost surreal. And it's right in the middle of the Fashion District!

Today was spent spending more money than I should have, on items that really weren't necessary. I bought a cute little Moleskin notebook to tote around in my purse to replace all of my scrap pieces with numbers and times jotted down, as well as the latest issue of Preen (even though I still have to flip through the ginormous September Vogue; is it bad that I've been saving it for the right time, almost as if it's a special treat?)

Funky fresh

I wore this outfit last night to my friend's house for our weekly viewing of The Hills (Team Lauren!). The whole time, I kept thinking that I should be doing jazzercise or something silly like that. And, I couldn't get Ciara's "1, 2 Step" out of my head.

Manhattan, part one

Manhattan was even better than I remembered it being. There is so much to see everywhere you look; the city is like a never ending supply of eye candy. First, I had a quick lunch with my parents at an Au Bon Pain, and then it was time to do some shopping!

We made quick stops at Anthropologie (if I could choose one store that is the embodiment of my natural style, this would be it), Juicy Couture (um. Let's just say I couldn't afford anything there), Levi's for my mom, and American Apparel! I finally decided to purchase a pair of purple leggings, and now I want them in every color. They're super comfy, and I just want to live in them 24/7!

Then it was off to a quick, informative information session at Parsons on 5th avenue. Frankly, I loved everything about the college. It's right in the heart of the city, borders other colleges (part of NYU's right next door), and the diversity of the student body is astounding. Please accept my application, Parsons!

On the way out, we passed by S'MAC, a simple East Village restaurant specializing in mac n' cheese. I'm praying we'll make a stop there Friday, when we go back to visit FIT.

On Monday, I'm going to visit Parsons in Manhattan with my parents. The downside: it's supposed to be pouring out. And of course, if I'm going to visit one of the schools I'm most interested in applying to for fashion design, I might as well look as good as possible on a dreary day. I found this super cute pair of rain boots at Laila Rowe in New Haven last night for $35.

And I already know what dress I'm wearing to match...=)

The Great Debate

Some swear by them. Others claim they are the UGGliest boots ever created. This debate seems to be never ending between my friends and family; but really...why hasn't the trend of Uggs gone away?

For as long as they've been popular in my town, I have considered them quite unattractive--especially the "short" ones. I could never wrap my head around why people wear the short Uggs. But then, I found an ad in a magazine for this gloriously hippie, flower-embroidered pair. I drooled over their uniqueness that set them apart from other Uggs for months. But when I finally had enough money to buy them, the wait list was over 4 months long, and winter would be long over by then.

This season, I considered the idea of purchasing a pair of Uggs ahead of time. The only pair I would ever wear are the "tall" ones in either Chocolate or Black. Before I knew it, I was ordering a pair of chocolate Uggs last night on Shopbop. I'm still not positive I should've bought them. My rationale is that a) winter is FREEZING here, and my Birkenstocks probably aren't the best winter shoes, b) they will last many, many years to come, and c) brown (or shall I say, "chocolate") goes with my whole wardrobe, so it won't be too hard to find clothes that look good with them.

I guess it's a little to late now, but what does everyone else think about Uggs? Have you given in and bought a pair of this never ending "trend"?

The cupcake gal

Yesterday I had a sudden urge to bake delicious, icing & sprinkle topped cupcakes. I didn't want them to be the same ol' vanilla batch, though, so I went recipe hunting for a simple vegan cupcake recipe. I found a super-easy one here, on wikiHow; the only difference between this recipe and regular cupcakes was the use of soy milk in place of regular milk, and the use of oil instead of butter and eggs. (*I am neither vegan nor vegetarian, but always love trying out such recipes to see what I can do differently) I then decorated the tops with raspberry and orange frosting and pretty star sprinkles. Unfortunately the frosting itself was not vegan.. I didn't have time to make my own and instead purchased it pre-made.

Today, I ventured into work today, cupcakes in tow, and waited for my coworkers to try them. They liked the denser texture, and subtle sweetness (I used a little less than 1.5 cups of sugar for 24 cupcakes...so I don't really understand why they didn't taste sweeter).

I also figured I'd dress up in a cutsey dress for such an occasion.

Rain, rain

Today I woke up to the sound of rain. It sucks really, waking up to that, because it just makes me want to stay in bed all day. So after having to force myself up and start my day, I had to meet with my art teacher for the school year and show her my summer homework progress. Basically, I have a lot of work to do. Sometimes I think I'm too sensitive for criticism, even when it is constructive. I need to learn how to change that, asap!

Now it is almost Saturday, the rain is still trickling down, and I am freezing. Wearing winter pajamas to bed in August is just crazy! At least the rain will make for a good night's sleep.

Fruity, perfume-y musings

I don't recall the first time I smelled Betsey Johnson's perfume, but that is the day I fell in love. This "fruity floriental" scent (as described on the Betsey Johnson website) is an instant mood lifter. I hate being unable to smell the scent a few minutes after I spray it on. If it weren't for potentially disgusted looks I would get from passerbyers, I would spray this perfume on me every few minutes.

Fruity, sweet-smelling fragerances are definitely my thing. I never thought I would like Paris Hilton's perfume until smelling it in a magazine; it instantly reminded me of sugary grapefruit candy (I have a pretty intense sweet tooth).

What's your favorite perfume/perfume genre? I'd love to hear!

Remembering to breathe

Has anyone ever met someone...whether it be an acquaintance or new found friend...who is a breath of fresh air? To me a breath of fresh air is this: someone who stands out from the rest in all the right ways. Usually I find breaths of fresh air in the little things people do, i.e., holding the door open, smiling, saying hello, and I try to do the same.

In high school, 99% of boys are as follows: stubborn, arrogant, and sex-minded. I was lucky enough to meet one recently who does not fit that description, and is a down-to-earth, friendly person. I am now very glad we've become friends and consider him my most recent breath of fresh air, the 1%.

On a Hollywood level, Anne Hathaway has to be my favorite breath. She is a confident woman with a great personality and style to match. Always stunning, always different (no rehab for her!), she is the perfect role model for girls of all ages.

Whilst browsing Style.com tonight, I came across Castle Starr, a line of playful party frocks in a mix of vintage and modern designs. Their website is instantly inviting with its jazz music and lusty feel. At around $600 for an intricately designed dress, Castle Starr isn't the most expensive clothing label in the world. If you have an event you could possibly splurge this much on, their clothing looks like it would be well worth the money. Their clothing has been featured in Teen Vogue (on Ashley Olsen!), InStyle, Nylon, and Allure, as well as other publications. Take a look at their site and you may just fall in lust as well.

A mad hat & jeans

The closest Goodwill to my home is...mediocre. I once found a brand spankin' new, $98 Banana Republic tweed skirt there. That, however, is my only success story. After reading about/seeing very awesome thrift store finds over at other blogs, I decided to try my luck out again, nearly a year later.

My first find? (Or shall I say, my mom's first find for me? Gotta love the mother.) A Merrimac Hat Corporation wool hat (where they still used mercury to make them), with a "Macy's, New York" tag. I had no idea what this hat company was until I Googled it just now; unfortunately the factory is now a condominium development.

The ribbon around the back edge of it is totally off, as you might be able to tell from the safety pin holding it in place in the picture.
Then, I found a trouser-ish pair of Gap jeans that fit me like a glove (and somehow remind me of Carol Brady). There is no such thing as too many jeans!

In conclusion, I have a new hope for this particular Goodwill.

Fall fashion standouts

For some reason, I rarely go on a designer's website to view runway collections...probably because it is just so overwhelming and probably because I fancy too many designers to view regularly. But as I was flipping through the August issue of Vogue, I found some stand-out architectural pieces of clothing, my favorites being from Bottega Veneta and Marc Jacobs' fall collections.

The BV skirt suit balances just the right amount of fitted and flouncy; the color reminds me of a crisp autumn day. On the other hand, the MJ look is fitted and completely polished, and the pop of red on the collar is somewhat flirtatious and sexy.

These are only two of many looks I found intriguing in Vogue, and for once I was inspired to learn more by visiting the designers' websites.

New York, New York

Since moving up north a few years ago, I have only visited NYC a handful of times. Every time I have gone, I get a massive headache from the city's never ending swirl of businessmen, tourists, colors, and noise.

The funny part is, I cannot imagine not going to college there.

Since I was a little girl, I've had this thing for fashion. I read magazines, and now blogs and other sites, like its my job. I get a high from watching the latest runway show or designing my own dress that is unexplainable. If I don't pursue a career in fashion-whether it be designing clothes, or writing for a magazine-I know I will regret it for the rest of my life.

However nice L.A. and other fashion capitols of the world seem, NYC is where my gut tells me to live. The city holds such a plethora of opportunities and possibilities and I know they overpower any possible repercussions.

Right now, I am very interested in attending Parson's or FIT. I would love more to hear some advice from current/former New Yorkers, as well as college students attending either school. Just know that I am a stubborn-headed teenager with more independence than I know what to do with; I can be prepared for the worst or the best.

It has been dreadfully rainy outside today. The rain wasn't even the pretty, serene type. Just misty, humid, ugliness. Well, I thought that at least until I saw the beautiful mist-covered Sleeping Giant State Park, across from where I work. I kicked myself when I realized I had forgotten to pack my camera in my purse.

I cooked another yummy meal tonight from July's issue of Real Simple, Roast Chicken with Grape and Blue Cheese Salad.

Vacation time?

In a few days, I will be leaving for a wonderful beach vacation. According to this article Americans are getting short-changed when it comes to their vacations. We have a measly 14 days (on average) of paid vacation time, compared to the Italians' 42 days.

Since I am still a minor with no 9-5 job, luckily this does not apply to me. However, it does to my parents, and how can I go on various vacations each year without them?

My advice: when you go on holiday, make sure you spend every single day doing what you went there to do. If you're going to the shore and the weather is permitting, spend the majority of your day basking in the sun rather than shopping at another 200-store mall. And especially do not bring your laptop, PDA, cellphone, etc, except for emergency purposes. In a country where we only receive 14 day of paid absence, it's not worth it to make such a priceless time like another day at the office.
